The General Manager (GM) of the Viking Pavilion & University Events oversees the daily operations of the new Viking Pavilion ensuring the successful production of internal university and external events. Providing sound fiscal oversight of the Arena is a key competency of the position, as well as managing expenses and recognizing additional revenue streams through efficient scheduling of external events.
The General Manager position will serve as the central event planning resource for users and provide guidance and support to athletics, faculty, staff, students and external renters. The position will determine the logistical needs of events and ensure proper delivery and execution of all support services.
The General Manager will possess the team building skills to assemble a staff that is passionate about the events industry combined with the talents and desire to position and grow the Viking Pavilion as a viable market contender. A sound background in talent recruitment and creating a staffing model that supports a customer centric philosophy for front of house operations and on-site event and operations management is critical.
Specific technical skills required of the position include the ability to interpret a variety of floor plans such as event layouts, seating manifests/seat mapping, facility blueprints, aerial rigging and load diagrams. Developing outdoor event directional and wayfinding signage using symbols and markings, which route guests from parking areas and public transit to the arena, is required.
The General Manager will have a firm understanding of and help to implement an Emergency Management Plan which is inclusive of a variety of stakeholders on campus. The candidate is required to have a firm understanding of assessing risk as it pertains to a variety of special events with the ability to evaluate insurance requirements and liability limits as prescribed by University contractual standards.
The position will also support event programming hosted within the Conference & Event Services portfolio of venues inclusive of: Smith Memorial Student Union, Hoffman Hall, and general pool academic classrooms. The position reports to the Director of Conference and Event Services in the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.
3 Years or more experience managing event venues with demonstrated evidence of achieving targets
3 Years or more of personnel management experience demonstrating the ability to develop and communicate a vision so that others commit to fulfilling the mission and goals of the organization and the ability to interact with staff members and manage staff resources in a consistent and equitable manner.
Ability to identify organizational needs and initiate strategies aligned with the institutional mission, strategic directions, and values
Ability to successfully exchange information through verbal and nonverbal symbols and behaviors such as understanding and interpreting facility building plans, arena structural truss load documents, seat mapping, wayfinding & directional signage, event floor plans and stage design.
Ability to successfully communicate, understand, and interact among persons with differing assumptions that exist because of ethnic and cultural orientations.
Ability to create educational environments and experiences that intentionally provide students with opportunities for acquiring intellectual and interpersonal skills, beyond the traditional place and time boundaries.
Bachelor’s degree in business management, hotel management, athletic or recreation management, or similar

Additional Salary Information: The starting annual salary rate for this position will be between $48,000 and $52,000 dependent upon qualifications and experience with an excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public Universities.
