Reporting to the Associate Director for Building Services, the Mandel Hall Manager, is responsible for the overall management of the 878 seat performance space, Mandel Hall and works closely with clients to provide technical support for events and programs. The Manager coordinates and oversees all aspects of production and provides on-site supervision for all performance hall events including lectures, conferences, film screenings, and performances. The Manager assists in the scheduling coordination of Mandel Hall in collaboration with the Event Management team. The Manager coordinates all Mandel Hall facility maintenance and custodial care, supervises student technical staff and manages the Hall’s annual operating budget.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1.Manage the daily operations of Mandel Hall including schedule coordination of the annual calendar of events, consulting and advising clients, developing staffing plans and assignments for technical crew and providing oversight of maintenance and custodial care. Manage all aspects of event production including lighting set design and lighting plot placement, consult and advise users on prop design and placement, and set-up and operate audio and sound board equipment during technical rehearsals and performances. Procure and manage inventory of all lighting and audio equipment. (60%)
2.Hire, train, supervise and schedule student technical staff to oversee events in Mandel Hall and, when needed, across the Student Centers portfolio of spaces. (20%)
3.Manage the annual operating budget and fiscal activity including the accounts receivable (billing of space rental and equipment lease/rental and staff time and services) accounts payable (purchasing and payment of supplies) and expense tracking and reconciliation. With the Associate Director, develop annual operating budget and perform quarterly budget analysis and produce forecast report of revenue and expense performance. (10%)
4.Serve as a member of the Student Centers staff and assist with various office programs and projects. This includes advising on technical theater matters and providing technical support for various theatrical and musical programming outside of Mandel Hall as needed, as well as other duties as assigned. (10%)
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Five (5) years of experience in Theater Management, Technical Direction, or Technical Production required. Staff supervisory experience is required. Knowledge of building systems and maintenance techniques is required. Ability to read and interpret documents such as blue prints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Excellent customer service skills are required. The candidate must have flexibility to work various hours and must be willing to work evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of project management software. The ideal candidate will have the ability to understand the needs of the University of Chicago community, and work with students, faculty and staff in a wide array of situations. Prior experience in budgetary processes (analysis and reporting) is preferred.
Physical Requirements: Facilities and operations management of a performance facility requires the ability to conduct regular building rounds and at times, stand for an extended period of time. Considerable movement within and around building throughout work shift. Pushing and lifting of lighting and sound equipment and packages, setting of tables and chairs. Some light lifting (10-50 lbs) is required.
Mental Requirements: Must be able to work independently and carry out assignments and projects without detailed instructions.
