Organizational Description: Strathmore is a nonprofit multi-disciplinary arts center and presenting organization based one-half mile outside the Capital Beltway in North Bethesda, Maryland. Best known for performances and events at the 1,976-seat Music Center at Strathmore, the organization has been presenting accessible, affordable visual and performing arts in the smaller historic Mansion at Strathmore and all over its 16-acre site since 1981. Strathmore operates the facilities on its campus in partnership with Montgomery County, MD government, which owns the buildings and property. Additionally, AMP by Strathmore, located at Pike and Rose, is a live music venue that operates throughout the year.
Position Summary Statement: The Director of Security position has one primary function – to provide consistent campus security year-round. This position plans, directs and coordinates activities relating to the protection, safeguarding and security of company assets, employees, invitees, and others; ensures that established goals and objectives are accomplished with prescribed priorities, time limitations and with fiscal responsibility; assists in the formulation of goals and objectives; designs, recommends, implements, and monitors security policies, procedures and programs; complies with federal, state and local legal regulations; and exercises independent judgment in the course of carrying out overall responsibilities and other activities as assigned.
This position also serves as the first on-call with the County Emergency Services division.
The Director of Security, in the past, has been required to live on campus in the Mansion studio apartment. This requirement is open for discussion with the final candidate. If on-site residency is waived, the Director of Security will still be required to spend at least 4 nights on campus per month. Additional overnight time may be required for potential weather events, heavy-use weekends, or special late-night Mansion events. A separate agreement for the use and care of the Mansion apartment would be undertaken between the Director of Security and Strathmore.
The Director of Security reports to the Executive Vice President of Operations, and secondarily to the Director of Operations and the Director of Front of House Operations. The Director of Security oversees the contracted security force and the occasional contracted services of the Montgomery County off-duty Police Officers.
Essential Security Duties and Responsibilities
Works a varied schedule of daytime, nighttime, showtime, and weekends, as appropriate.
Submits a weekly schedule of hours to the Executive Vice President of Operations.
When personal emergencies arise, which necessitate a change in the schedule, the Director of Security will immediately notify the Executive Vice President of Operations.
Responds to all Strathmore emails, texts, and phone calls within two hours.
Any email, or text that has the word “emergency” in the heading requires his/her immediate response.
Maintains a prioritized work assignment list and reports on progress, on a weekly basis, in a weekly Operations Director’s meeting.
Plans, examines, analyzes, evaluates, and supervises Strathmore’s security operations, inclusive of physical security assets and security personnel.
Prepares reports and records for Strathmore, and for the contracted security force.
Evaluates current procedures, practices, and precedents for accomplishing Strathmore’s activities and functions relative to security.
Identifies and resolves security related problems.
Identifies and manages, Mansion parking lot issues, such as special parking requests, the placement of traffic cones, deployment of security staff, etc.
Jointly manages the following items with Strathmore’s Director of Facilities Maintenance & Event Services: County-installed Kantech Access Control System, Music Center and Mansion Keys and Keying Systems, Mansion Parking Lot Permitting System and Surveillance of Parking Lot for Ticketing, County-installed Vicon CCTV system for all cameras within the Strathmore campus and the system through Montgomery County Security and its contractors.
Manages the Maryland Public Access AED program for the campus.
Prepares periodic budget estimates and reports.
Reviews the security operation’s efficiency and quality control.
Develops preventative security programs.
Conducts regular active shooter trainings.
Supervises the contracted security personnel.
Conducts, annually, physical survey of premise security, including security equipment condition.
Conducts, supervises, and prepares reports relating to internal investigations of any losses or violations of Strathmore’s regulations, policies and procedures.
Develops, implements, and manages security training.
Assists in preparation of emergency management and contingency planning.
Serves as Strathmore’s liaison with public law enforcement, fire and other agencies as it relates to security at Strathmore and/or with Strathmore personnel.
Performs, arranges, and supervises executive level protection for visiting guests.
Resolves work grievances or submits unsettled grievances (in reference to the security force) to the Executive Vice President of Operations.
Prepares work schedules; assigns, or delegates responsibilities.
Manages the golf carts and deploys these vehicles during appropriate events.
Responsible for ensuring that the Strathmore campus opens on time, and closes on time, each day.
Performs other activities as assigned.
Satisfactory completion of this job will include excellent attention to detail, anticipation of facility’s security needs, exercising sound professional judgment, meeting financial goals, building and maintaining good working relationships with staff, partners and other colleagues, keeping excellent records, working well as a member of the Operations Department team, and meticulous oversight of all security related financial documents. It will also be determined by operating within the Strathmore approved budget.

Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree, in a law enforcement field, plus a minimum of at least five years of progressively responsible security position expertise in the public venue environment.
